A/N: A little bit cyberpunk, a little bit AU. This one was really a challenge for me! I totally fail at sci-fi.
A second's distraction, a crucial slip in tactics, and Gojyo might have paid for it had Hakkai thought there was some kind of choice involved.
Pain cut the world to black. It was over.
"...ai! ...kai!"
The trembling voice roused him. Shaking hands wrenched off the simulator's helmet.
"Malakai! You-" His best friend's worried face hovered over him, framed by falls of neopunk red, looking so like his avatar current and virtual reality blended dizzily for a moment.
"Oh," he said, smiling and glad when he realised. "Keep playing."
Deke scowled, his eyes moist. "Idiot," he swore. "Not without you."
