megmurry's fault. ALL OF IT.
"Save him!" Yaone was yelling.
"I can't!" Hakkai shouted. "Not for all the magic in the world can I help him now!"
"What is magic for," the maiden demanded, "if it cannot even save a unicorn?!"
And then they saw him. Climbing up from the ruins, standing over the fallen bishop, sword bared.
"That's what heroes are for," Kougaiji announced.
His father the Red Bull Gyuumaoh did not stop at the sight of his son. He charged right through him.
"NO!"
Hazel cried out, watching the prince fall. He turned to the advancing Demon King, eyes white and horn glowing.
---
He charged, barrelled forward with horn burning, and Red Bull Gyuumaoh fell back. Into the water. The unicorns rose up, split mozzetta capes flying, pouring from the crests of the waves until they consumed the king.
They streamed out, whole charges of them, shining bishops winding up the rock and steps of Houtou Castle, that crumbled beneath their boots.
"The last!" Nii shouted down to Hazel from the high tower once Gyokumen's. "I knew you were the last!"
And the floor fell out beneath him, and the castle shook and broke, falling down into the sea.
And the Hazels whinnied.
---
In the end, the bishops were gone. Only one remained.
Kougaiji awoke to the touch of a horn on his forehead, to sad, distant blue eyes.
"I remember you," Hazel said. "I remember."
And then he ran away. And there was nothing but the waves.
"I wish I could see him just once more," Kougaiji said. " He never knew what I really meant to say..."
Hakkai touched his shoulder. "He will remember your heart when men are fairy tales in books written by rabbits. Of all unicorns, he is the only one who knows what regret is-- and love."
---
Hakkai turned to Yaone. "Come with me?" he asked.
"I will."
And in the night, after Yaone was asleep, Hakkai looked up from the campfire to see the bishop there, outlined by the moon.
"You are a true wizard now," Hazel said, when he approached. "Does it make you happy?"
"I am sorry. I have done you evil and I cannot undo it."
"No. Bishops are in the world again. No sorrow will live in me as long as that joy-- save one, and I thank you for that part too. Farewell, good magician. I will try to go home."
