Alphonse stood there, covered in scratches and mud and holding out a handful of wilting flowers. The splashes of colour seemed out of place in his grasp, being such a serious and pale boy. He scared the other kids in his year and had already gained quite a reputation by hitting another child when he’d kicked in his brother’s sand castle.
Dee didn’t see what the big deal was; although he wasn’t so sure about this token of affection he was being offered. “Why’re you givin’ me flowers, Al?”
“’Cause Mamma said that you should give flowers to the person that you like, and I like you, so I’m giving you flowers.”
Dee nodded slowly, and crammed his fist into his mouth. “’Kay.”
Elizabeth smiled at them as they walked off hand in hand, the bunch of flowers being tugged along behind them on Dee’s train, and went back to the washing up, making a mental note to reprimand Alphonse for ruining the flower beds.
