063 - Become Eco-Efficient in Five Ways

Achieved?
Five ways to be more eco-efficient in my daily life have been identified and carried out until they are a regular occurrence

Why?
Really, this is pretty self-explanatory, however, I am ashamed to say I used to be of the mindset "what difference can one person make?" and "why should i bother?" when it came to being 'green'. Maybe it's because I grew up or maybe it's because I got smarter, who knows, but it was definitely an important goal for me to add to the list.

Listed below are the items I have identified and started working on:

1) Recycle, recycle, recycle - I now have a recycling 'station' in my kitchen, for anything that can be recycled. This then gets transferred outside to the recycling bin two or three times a day. I am astounded (and disgusted) in just how much I must've been previously throwing in the regular bin that could've been recycled *face palm*. I haven't had to put the regular bin out for two weeks, but the recycling bin is jammed! Don't panic, though, I'm not just chucking everything into a different bin. I have done a lot of research on what can/can't be recyled and how to treat the items before you put them in the yellow-topped bin. I'm pretty darn proud of myself!

2) Composting - I guess this could fall under the above category, but they are two separate things in my book. Once again, I have a bucket in the kitchen for all food scraps which gets transferred down to the compost bin at the end of the garden every afternoon. I need to do a bit more research on the process of 'turning' the compost heap as otherwise I am just producing greenhouse gases in my back yard. Also, I need to work out the best way to stop the possums from basically destroying the bin to get at the food. Still, I guess if they are eating it then it is "recycling".

3) Plastic bags - Essentially, if I use a plastic bag I donate $1 to charity. I am armed for every shopping instance with a 'green bag': at work, in the car, at home, in my handbag. Today I went with a guy from work to the supermarket and although I didn't buy anything, he ended up using a carrier bag. I put $1 in the guide dog for the blind charity appeal as I should also take my green bags if I'm shopping with someone else.
