By the third day, she's starting to feel more like herself. She's getting used to the rhythm of motherhood, trying to sleep when the baby's sleeping, waking up to feed her. "It's not naked females that's the problem, it's naked you," says Geoffrey, staying quiet as he comes to her side. He knows enough not to wake a sleeping newborn. He knows a lot of things about children he didn't know, or just didn't care about, before the island. "How are you feeling?"

"Well, I'm not naked either," says Charlie, grinning. She holds one hand out to him as he walks over. She nods.

Geoffrey's not sure she's not just saying that to appease him--and for him, in turn, to appease Duck--but she does look all right. Not a hundred percent, but all right. "I'm not going to wake her up, am I?"

"She sleeps like her daddy," says Charlie, shifting the little girl's weight. "Once she's out, she's out. THe only trouble is, she wakes herself up hungry every hour or so. But I only just fed her, so we've got time."

She shoots him a look.

"You're going to have to meet her awake eventually, Geoffrey."

"I'm not afraid of meeting her awake," he says, "only worried about making sure you get enough respite. I'm pretty sure you need more rest than you're getting." Which is true of all new mothers, but especially true in this case. "I'm allowed to be sincere sometimes."
