I've been making up for lost time I guess. I feel like I have more people to talk to wherever I go then I have before. Of course then I go to a poorly attended show at Mezzanote and only have Billy to talk to even though I know the name of 80% of the people in the room.
That was Saturday and we ended up talking about sexism for awhile. I think that women and people who put on shows are equally at fault for more women not going to certain shows. The guys who put on the shows don't go out of their way to promote to women and women don't go out of their way to represent themselves.
It's complicated I suppose. I'd like to say that many of the guys at that show were sexist and don't go out of their way to befriend girls who they aren't attracted to. Billy is friends with many of them and didn't disagree. But he did say that they still can be nice guys and I agree. I just don't feel that I should have to try so hard after four years to be cool enough for people.
It's not really that dire a situation, just airing my thoughts. Never Enough, Instilled, Hit the Lights and Earthquake played that show. Instilled was really good, best of the show. Never Enough was good too if I remember. Hit the Lights has a few new members, no idea when that happened or if it's permanent. Earthquake had Steve Port who is also in Another Breath now; short set but they seem to be going places with some more practice, songs and experience. Steve is a good drummer and the bands he ends up in are usually good.
Saturday night I went to a meeting for ska and the new high school bands. It was upstairs at the Wescott and members of Razbari Sumthing, Magic Goat, Billy Reily and The Verbs attended along with Danny and myself. We needed to talk about why and when bands get paid, venues, how getting shows and the scene works in general. Everything just needed to be clarified so everyone would be on the same page.
Danny brought snacks and asked some questions to get a better idea of where everyone was coming from. Found out most of the kids in the HS bands had been going to shows for a year or two and were open to any criticism so they can become better performers. Danny, RazSum and I explained money and how ska works in Syracuse. Everything went really well; lots of discussion and accomplished everything we set out to. Now everyone is comfortable with each other and it's all very positive.
The ska scene makes me so happy. No worries about anything but breaking even; very little drama and lots of friends.
