Summary: The year was 1820, when two most unlikely people fell in love with each other and decided that they would seek a future that was going to be as bright and as beautiful as the world would be.

The year was 1820; a time where the world was in a state of metamorphosis- growing into itself; developing, waiting to break out of the cocoon it was in and emerge beautiful.

“Hyung.”

The older man turned at hearing the voice of the younger. He saw the expression on his face, a most peculiar expression of petulance, worry and excitement etched onto his beautiful features and could not help but laugh loudly.

He brought a hand to cup the fair cheek and when it pinked-an adorable, beautiful flush of color- he laughed once again, now softer and slightly shy and said,

“We’ll be alright, I promise you.”

The year was 1820 and in January, the housekeeper Mrs. Lee brought her son, Jinki as he was named in to the household that she worked for to help out as a gardener.

“Who are you?”

Jinki squeaked at hearing a voice come suddenly from behind and promptly tripped over the shovel embedded in the brown earth. He peeked past his bangs, made a strangled noise when he realized who it was and scrambled to stand up. The man looked at him suspiciously, like he shouldn’t be here among the beds of lavender.

“Taemin-sshi.”

Jinki wasn’t particularly sure what he was supposed to do, faced with the young master of the house, to bow (but according to his mother, the young master was his junior) or to offer a handshake (but his status was far below the young master’s). His body, ever traitorous, settled for a combination of both which resulted in him half bowed with his arm extended.

The younger blinked, startled by the strange man but his lips slowly upturned.

The year was 1820 and in June, in the heat of summer, cicadas chirped noisily as two young men of different statuses and age became unlikely best friends.

“Taemin-sshi, your tutor is going to be looking for you again.” Jinki chastised, but with no real heat, not when the sun was blazing and beads of perspiration were rolling madly down his back, soaking his shirt completely. He grabbed the bucket from where Taemin was pulling weeds and the younger shot him a dirty look and a pout.

“I don’t care Hyung; I want to be with you.”

The words were naïve, but sweet and sent palpitations through the heart of the older man. He surreptitiously looked at the younger who was idly picking the petals off a wildflower and wondered if he even knew how much it meant to him. Jinki brushed a stray lock of hair away from Taemin’s face and just smiled innocently when the younger looked at him.

The year was 1820 and in August, two young men fought in a greenhouse because one couldn’t believe the other actually loved him.

“Damn you Hyung, why can’t you believe me? I may be young, but I’m not stupid enough to confess without being sure of how I feel.”

Taemin’s words stuck a discordant note in him and his head hurt (partially also because Taemin’s punches actually hurt like hell) along with his heart. Why did he say that, after he spent the entire summer convincing himself that no good was going to come out of this relationship.

“Taemin. You just... I...” He stuttered somewhat stupidly.

“Hyung, I love you. I want to be with you.”

With that, the younger leaned close and pressed his lips solidly; boldly against the older’s.

The year was 1820 and in November, the lord of the manor struck his son across the face soundly when he told him he loved the housekeeper’s son. The lord had of course, found out earlier about his son’s illicit relationship and in a fit of pique, fired the housekeeper and her blasted son and threatened to send him away if he even came close to the house.

“Father, I love him.”

“Son, I wish to hear no more of this nonsense.”

He repeated firmly once again even as he noted the spark of raw fury in his father’s eyes. Taemin knew he probably shouldn’t continue, not when his father looked so enraged he could absolutely kill him, but he had to let him understand.

“Love? This is unnatural, my boy! And we have no place for love in our kind of life. You will marry a respectable young lady and that is the end of this madness.”

Taemin shook his head, no, this was not the end.

The year was 1820 and in December, with its chilly winds and unpredictable temperatures, two young men decided to go against convention and everything society had dictated for them, just so to validate an unforbidden love.

Jinki halted, the only pause he had since twilight, as they stood at the station, moments before they were to board the train.

“What’s wrong?”

Taemin looked around, panicked; had someone discovered them?

Jinki shook his head but looked at him, gravely serious,

“Do you really want to do this?”

The younger man didn’t answer but simply gathered his few possessions in one arm and entwined his other hand in his.

As Onew looked out of the cabin; Taemin fast asleep in his arms, with the mist of the early morn slowly swirling away and evaporating into nothingness, he felt truly alive.

The year was 1820, when two most unlikely people fell in love with each other and decided that they would seek a future that was going to be as bright and as beautiful as the world would be.
