Fairy Tales do come true
Another Saturday nigh baby-siting, but i can't complain because the Millers pay me $10 an hour on Saturdays. They knew i'm giving up a date with my boyfiend Tommy.
"Owen pooped," Will says, looking up at me.
"I know, that's why i'm changing his diaper," I say.
"He poops his pants," the 4-year-old says again, then runs off, leaving me to wrestle with his brother.
"Will, it's time to get inot your PJs," I yell after him.
When I finish changing Own, I read the kids a classic bedtime story abouta beautiful girl who meets a handsome prince and they live happily ever after.
Once they're asleep, I call Tommy. I miss haning out with him on the weekends, but I'm saving so much money for my own prom dress and our limo rental that i tell hyself it is totally worth it.
Tommy isn't picking up. Maybe he went to a moive. i never knoew what he's up to because he never really makes plans. In our relationship, I'm the organized one, and Tommy is so not. Take prom, for example, I've had my dress on hld for two months. Even though the dance i sjust a week away, Tommy still hasn't started looking at tuxedos. When i mentioned it to him, he just smiled and said, "I'll do it soon," then went back to playing video games.
"All the black tuxes are going to be gone," I pointed out. "What if you end up with a green one....or pink?"
"Pink would be cool," Tommy said, keeping his eyes on the screen. OK, I'll admit Tommy isn't exactly the GQ type, but i can't help but love him.
I sit on the couch bored for a few minutes before i call my best friend Kate.
"Hey, Madison," she says. "Lemme guess, you're stuck with the two brats."
"They're asleep," I say. "And actually, they weren't that bad tonight. What are you up to?"
"Look, I've gotta tell you something," she whispers.
"What?" I say, anxious for the latest gossip.
"I saw Zoe at the movies....with Tommy," she says.
"So? That's no big deal," I reply, but I'm really worried. Zoe is superhot and a huge flirt, and she doesn't have a boyfriend right now.
"They were to-ge-ther," Kate says, really emphasizing the word.
"What do you mean, together?" I ask feeling like someone just dropped a brick on my chest.
"why don't I come over and we can talk," Kate offers.
When she shoes up, I've already been crying. Kate explains what she saw and suddenly it's pretty clear to me why Tommy has never complained about my babysitting-he's been flirting with Zoe while I've been stuck changin diapers. I'm furious and call his cell, even though I know he won't answer.
"It's over," I practically yell at his voicemail, but I don't want to wake the kids. "Don't ever talk to me again. Oh, and as for prom, why don't you take Zoe 'cause you're not going with me!"
I hang up and start crying agian.
"You did the right thing," Kate says. "Forget about him. You can go to the prom with me and Josh."
At first it sounds good, but then i wonder if i really want to go to the biggest dance of the year with my best friend and her boyfriend? And watch Tommy make out wiht Zoe all night long? It's too depressing to think about.
When the Millers ask if i can baby-sot the next Friday, i say yes. What else do i have to do? I might as well spend the night with two kids who go to bed early and i can chill out infront of the TV.
"My big brother is coming tomorrow," Will explains while we're eating dinner. Owen throws a cracker on the floor and yells "Yeah, yeah, yeah!"
"You mean, Eric?" I ask, already knoewing hte answer. Eric is Mr. Miller's son from his first marriage and he goes to a private school out of state.
"Aaaarick! Aaaarick!" Owen starts chanting.
"I guess you guys like Eric a lot, huh?" I ask.
"He's the best brother!" Will exclaims.
Later when I'm reading their bedtime story, I change the fairy tale just a bit. "Sadly," I say, "Prince Charming ends up going to a movie with Zoe, so he and the princess do't live happily ever after." I feel tears filling up my eyes and I blink to hold them back.
"Don't cry," Will says sadly. He points to the picture of the castle in the book with the smiling prince and princess. "It's OK, see? They're happy forever and ever," he pats my hand, which makes me want to cry even more. Who knew a 4-year-old could be so sweet?
After the kids are asleep, I don't feel like watching TV, so I thik about crank-calling Tommy. But why give him the attention? Instead, I get a bowl of ice cream. I'm about to sit down when the doorbell rings, which freaks me out. I look through the peephole and see a totally hot guy wiht a backpack.
"Hi, I'm Eric...I, um, live here?" he says.
"Oh," I say opening the door. "Hi, I'm Madison, the baby-sitter."
"Sorry if I scared you," Eric says, putting down his bag.
"They weren't expecting me until tomorrow."
I just stand there, staring at him. I've never see anyone so good looking up close. "Uh...yeah," I say.
"You have something..." he leans in to touch my cheek and, for a second, I fantazie that we're going to kiss and live happily ever after, just like a fairy tale. "Chocolate?" he asks, wiping my cheek.
"Oh, I was just having some ice cream. Want some?" I ask lamley.
We end up sitting at the table, eating ice cream and talking for hours. I don't even know how it happened, but when he asked me if i had a boyfriend the whole story about Tommy came out. Then Eric tells me about a girl at his school who cheated on him last year. He is so easy to talk to.
"Let me walk you home," Eric offers when his dad and step-mom get back.
"It's OK, I'm just on the next block," I say.
"It's dark, I'll walk you," Eric says, grabbing my coat.
We're at my house before I know it. "I'm really glad i got to meet you," he says as i take out my keys.
"I don't knoew if this is weird for you, but do you want to do something tomorrow night?" he asks. My heart skips a beat. "Tomorrow is prom...," I start to explain.
"Don't you wan tto go?" Eric asks. "You sai dyou had a dress an everything and I can probably borrow my dad's tux."
I look into his eyes and know my life just changed.
The next day, I use the money i've been saving to hit the spa and salon. Then Eric meets me at my house and we go to the dance.
When we walk in, people stop to stare and Eric takes my hand right on cue.
"Holy cow!" Kate says, her mouth hanging open.
"What happend? Who is that?" she points at Eric and I just shrug.
"I call him Prince Charming," I laugh. At that moment I felt like a princess in my beautiful dress. The best part? I see Tommy (in a pink tuxedo!) with Zoe and he can't take his eyse off me.
"Want to dance?" Eric says, taking my hand.
"Forever and ever," I tell him.
The End!
