how can you be firmly routed in a belief in nothing? and how can it be cheapening to life yet so immensley freeing? and why do people find it so offenseive? i don't understand, and i'll probably never understand the answers to these questions, but then again, are there really any answers for them? haha it's gonna suck if i ever get old. and on that ( Read more... )

"The belief in nothing" and "strive toward nothingness"... nihilism--- is still a belief, and still something you actively work towards, therefore rendering the philosophy hypocritical and unachievable. The search for a taste of the void may be freeing, but so is intently following any passion. I used to regard such a concept [achieving a state of acceptance in nothingness and a total lack of beliefs] as ideal, but true spiritual clarity is more likely to 'free you' if you strive towards something intangible on a more positive level.. .
not to say that you should change your passions, but rather, I don't believe that your passions truly lie in the pursuit of nothingness.

and happy birthday. D:

thanks britany. and yes i'm well aware of nihilism. i was a half-proponent of it before i found out it's name (which happened earlier this year). even though it's very un-existentailist of me to call myself and existentialist, that very closely matches my beliefs, and so, if you know some of the creed of that particular philosophy, i find things to give me purpose. my purpose so far is music. i can't imagine being without it. and hopefully never will have to. so, existentialism/nihilism is freeing in the sense that i have nothing to shoot for therefore no way to miss a goal that is ultimatley pointless. what i do i do, it's neither right nor wrong, and i have to live with whatever consequences it brings, either positive or negative.
