If I were to link my PC to my Laptop via a USB cable, would I be able to transfer some files across without any problems?

nope.

You can use a serial lead (old style serial, not USB) or a "direct parallel" lead or IrDA infra-red by using:

Start -> Accessories -> Communications -> New Connection Wizard -> Advanced Connection

or, buy a "crossover" RJ45 network cable:

or

(yes, they're the same lead effectively, yes, Maplin is a ripoff, no, eBuyer don't have stores on most highstreets).

... and connect the two things into a LAN without a HUB.

Depending on what you wanna transfer, and if your machines have CD burners, a CDR is prolly the cheapest way, though.

Basically, all I want to do is transfer some music from my laptop to my pc in order to burn it all off. My laptop has a cd burner but for some reason, none of the cd's I've made on it can be recognised by anything, not even my laptop! I've formatted the discs and made sure they're compatible with everything but nothing seems to work, hence wanting to get it to my pc. ANy ideas? I'm using sonic software on my laptop if that helps?

You can't format a normal CDR, I'm not sure what you mean by that.

Have you tried different brands of disc? Or maybe different burning software?

Maybe download a trial copy of NERO:

... put that on the lappy (by cutting a CD on the desktop), see if it's any use?

What's "sonic", by the way, and what kind of CD are you cutting? Data or audio?

Sonic is the standard burning software that comes with Dell's I think.
I've tried data and audio discs on a variety of cdr's but nowt works. I'll give nero a bash though, I have a copy of that here anyway *nods* Cheers Scott :)

hope you have some joy, mate. otherwise, I'd suspect your CD-writer was having The AIDS.

If you don't have any luck, ^^ that wee feller is probably the cheapest option you can get off the highstreet (if your highstreet has a maplins, they're about twice the cocking price from PCworld), or the crossover RJ45 is the easiest/fastest by quite a lot, but a few quid more costly.
