Hey everyone,
My ship just back into port today. Thank god. It was a very different experience being out at sea. We went out to San Diego and were there for about 3 days. Then it took us about 2 weeks to get back because we were doing operations out in the ocean, shooting missiles off, and flight ops. It was all going great. The reason for these operations is so we can be ready for when something actual happens. We do flight ops just in case another helicopter goes down, a man in the water.. so on and so forth. Well, while we were in our little break from my ship's flight ops during lunch one day, another ship (whom we were practicing with 2 other ships out there), their helo went down:
SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) January 26, 2007 -- A U.S. Navy helicopter crashed Friday near San Clemente Island in the Pacific Ocean, killing at least one of the four people aboard, a Navy spokesman told CNN.
Cmdr. Jack Hanzlik said the MH 60 Sierra Seahawk helicopter was conducting a routine training mission off the USS Bonhomme Richard with four aboard. It crashed at 2:30 p.m. (5:30 ET).
Search and rescue efforts are under way for the other three, he said.
He said the cruiser USS Chosin and destroyer USS Chung-Hoon (my ship) were participating in the exercise and the rescue effort. The Coast Guard is also assisting in the rescue effort.
No other aircraft were involved in the mishap, Hanzlik said.
The Bonhomme Richard is a multipurpose amphibious assault ship whose primary purpose is to deploy Marine landing forces, according to a Navy Web site.
Hanzlik said the names of the crew members are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The incident is under investigation.
In the end, the one that they did recover died upon arrival to the ship he belonged to and the other three were never found. It was pretty sad. But i suppose thats life in the military. You need to adjust to whatever is thrown at you. So, All-in-All, i'm in port until the 12th. We don't go out on deployment until April. But, like i say, i'm in the military and that can all change within 24 hours. I hope everyone is doing well, hope to hear from some of you before we go back out! Talk to y'all laters!
Love, Sara
