Sorry for the random comment from a stranger, but you happen to be on my "friends of friends" - we have siel in common.
Anyway. Texas has some of the toughest laws in the nation, and considering "J" was assaulted, or threatened with assault, I wouldn't see why you can't press charges against everyone involved. I live in PA, and you can pretty much file whatever you want against anyone you want. Some random bitch filed trespass charges against me, and they actually STUCK. That's a whole other story. So I don't see why you couldn't press charges against these people.
I obviously don't know the entire story, but "J" is a minor, and I assume the other people were over 18? If they weren't - that might be the sticking point.
My best suggestions:
1. Get a lawyer 2. Go down to the local police and file harassment, assault, intent to do bodily harm, etc. against all 3 people. Let the COURTS - not the sheriff decide what can stick and what can't. The lawyer will let you know what else you can do. 3. Go after the person that swung the bat with a bodily injury suit. They should be paying for pain and suffering, medical expenses, time lost from work, rehab (if "J" is in rehab), loss of companionship, lawyer fees, etc. I hate lawyers, and I hate the judicial system, but it's supposed to work for the people that were actually injured. So I hope it can work for "J".
