Semitic Stereotypes on The Learning Channel

Jul 07, 2005 23:57

I was sitting here flipping channels tonight, and TLC is apparently doing a show about origins of the flood myth. They are talking about Mesopotamia & Babylonian flood myths right now.

And they show a happy little Babylonian family suddenly terrified by the flood. And, you know how some old Mesopotamian portrait statues show people with unibrows?

Every single person in this "Babylonian family" has a humongous unibrow drawn on in black make-up. Every one, even the little tiny children.

Oh, and now they are showing "Noah's family." And they all have big black unibrows too.

I am absolutely disgusted by the blatant racism here. What the fuck are they thinking?

P.S. they are also blatantly misrepresenting and fudging the myths. But that is a slightly lesser offense.

mesopotamia, racism
