She was mine! Lily Baker. At last I had my very own Slayer of the Vampyr. This was even better than the time I got my limited edition Lyta Alexander Babylon 5 action figure and realised she was an uber rare cos she had the Psi Corp black gloves variation ( Read more... )

Lily: I looked up at the sound of my name being called. Andrew looked really excited and he was wearing gym clothes. I pulled out his comic and handed it to him carefully.

"Thank you for letting me read it. I made sure nothing happened to it."

I beamed a smile at him.

"Mr. Giles says you get to keep me."

"Not like that." I burst out as strange thoughts of Lily all packaged up in plastic with an uncreased cardboard backing flickered through my brain.

I am grateful that she has handed me back my preciousss. She didn't even dog-ear it which is impressive for the uninitated.

"Mr Giles has deemed me suitable to become your Watcher. It is a sacred task, steeped in tradition that goes back eons.
You, the slayer, are the instrument, the vessel. I am the hand that guides you, makes you lethal and efficient in the fight against the evil horde."

I lead her out into the back yard where several other slayers are drilling some attack and defense moves.

"Today we will start with something simple. A test of your reflexes and senses." I motion her over to an empty area.

I go over to a side table and bring back a blindfold and a huge rubber baseball bat.

"These will be the tools for our first lesson in slaying, little one."
I say in my most dignified and sage voice.

Lily : "You're planning to blindfold me and attack me with the bat?" I asked, arching an eyebrow at him.

"Wouldn't that make me more of a pinata than a slayer?"

"Ooh padawan, much have you to learn of the ways of the For- err Slayer." I hand her the bat, and begin to place the blindfold around her eyes.

"I will be the pinata. All you have to do is concentrate on the sounds of my movement and try to hit me with the bat. The deadly ninja assassins of legend are said to practice this technique to hone their senses. Well not with the rubber bat of course, that would be silly, but with ninja-to swords. Which is really cool and stuff."

I step back, and begin to circle around her.

"Focus on your other senses, deprived of sight you must rely on sound and....um smell I guess. Don't worry about holding back, you won't hurt me. The question is....can you even hit me?"

I try to be stealthy in my movements, but also to distract her with feints and lunges to keep her off balance.

Lily: I twirled the bat in my hand effortlessly as I tried to focus on the sounds. Andrew sort of yelped the first time I hit him with the bat.

"Oh! I'm sorry, are you all right?"

I took the blindfold off to check on him. The last thing I wanted to do was make Andrew cry again. I knew I should have remembered to bring pocket tissues with me.

"Um, I'm fine." I respond with a whimper. OWWWWWW, that is gonna leave a nasty bruise. "A lucky hit for a novice, but can you do it again? I think not."

I motion for her to put the blindfold on again, and begin circling her again. This time I will not make it so easy for her.

Lily: I refastened the blindfold and twirled the bat. It felt practically weightless in my hands. I could almost feel where Andrew was moving. I let him take a couple more steps before spinning in his direction and swinging the bat to connect with him.

I heard a loud "OW!" and a thump.

Ripping off the blindfold I gasped as I found Andrew sprawled unconcious on the training matt. Kneeling beside him, I took his hand in mine and slaps his face gently with my free hand.

"OH GOd! Andrew!! Wake up, i'm sorry. Please wake up!"

"No mummy, Tucker took it not me....." I mumble, the world is spinning around me, I feel like a beyblade. "I don't want anymore fruit punch."

I clutch at the female form holding me. She feels like home. Like green apples and lemonade. Does she forgive me for what I have done?

"I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to. Warren made me do it. I'm sorry...." I sob a few more times before passing out completely and going limp in my slayers arms.

"Nnnnnnh" I croak as I come to. I open my eyes and see Giles and Lily hovering over me. I try to sit up but my head feel's like it's the size of the Death Star.

"Wh-what happened? Did I drop lots of candies on all the happy kiddies?" My mind is still groggy and I'm not sure why I'm lying on the ground.

Giles: To Lily I ask, "Candies? Kiddies? Is he making any sense to you?"

To Andrew I say, "Apparently, you were training Lily here and recieved a blow to the head. Lets see if there is any permenant damage, shall we? Do you know your name?"

Lily: "No, not really." I admitted as I looked down at Andrew.
"Hey, Jedi master, you back with us? Your padawan needs you back with us."

"I'm Andrew Wells. I think..." I reply to Giles, then I look at Lily, and the pain sort of recedes into a dull throb. I'm feeling pretty lightheaded, like I want to laugh at everything. I manage a feeble smile.

"Giles, the Force is strong with this one." Then I struggle to my feet with their help. I'm still pretty dizzy, but elated too.

"Lily, that was amazing, well not the getting hit on the head part because hello, that was ow! But the way you just knew where I was and followed my every move. You were like the Daredevil. It was tres cool." I beam at Lily and Giles.

Not bad for a first day huh?

Lily: "Really?" I squealed with just a little too much excitement.
"Andrew, I don't want to hurt you again! Maybe next time we should work on me hitting something that isn't you."
I had the coolest watcher ever.

Giles: I am not sure how he manages to keep coming out of these situations unscathed but he does.

"He'll be fine I'm sure. Er Andrew? No more training today? Alright?" I really do not need any excursions to the emergency room today.

"Of course Mr Giles. We don't want to tire out our charges too quickly, do we." I agree with the g-man, glad to be relieved from further duties involving big sticks for the day.

"Besides, Lily here passed with flying colors." Lily helps me walk inside and to sit down on one of the giant hotel seats in the lobby. I think I'm gonna just lean back for a while, still a bit woozy on my feet.

I gaze pleadingly up at Giles, while I press my hankie to my brow.

"Hot cocoa?"

Giles: Looks at him increduously. Does he honestlt believe I have time or the inclination to make him cocoa? Do I look like the den mother here? I sigh, and resign myself to doing just that.
"Certainly Andrew. Lily do you wish for some as well?" Bloody hee, I am the den mother.

Lily: It's all right, Mr. Giles. I can make Andrew some hot chocolate. I'm sure you have other things to do." I smiled brightly at him and took Andrew carefully by the arm.

"Come on, Andy, I think there are some oreo's in the kitchen too."

My comic was still in the pocket of my track pants, it was probably all creased and folded when I was knocked unconscious, no longer a collector's item. But somehow it didn't really matter anymore.

"I hope we still have those little marshmellow bits left. I love those." I confide as I accompany Lily to the kitchen. She really was a sweetheart, and she was my slayer.

"Mmmm oreos, do you like twist them apart and eat the cream first, or just munch them whole, or dunk them in stuff? You can actually tell a lot about a person by the way they eat their oreos...."
